The US Senate Armed Services Committee has approved legislative provisions that would establish comprehensive governance standards for the Pentagon’s development and deployment of artificial intelligence-enabled military systems. Included within the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, the measures require meaningful human oversight of autonomous weapons, enhanced testing and validation procedures, stronger accountability mechanisms, and explicit prohibition of AI systems making independent decisions regarding nuclear weapon employment. The legislation reinforces that commanders and military personnel retain ultimate responsibility for the use of force while promoting responsible integration of AI into future defense capabilities.
