Kawasaki Heavy Industries announced at the International Aerospace Exhibition in Tokyo on October 17, 2024, that it will test its new “New SSM” anti-ship missile in fiscal year 2027. This missile is a long-range cruise weapon built to attack from outside enemy defensive ranges. It is powered by a small, fuel-efficient turbofan engine and has wings for aircraft-like flight. Its resemblance to the U.S. Tomahawk in range and design has led to it being dubbed the “Japanese Tomahawk.”
