Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division has introduced the Nomad, a new generation of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drones that combine features of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Equipped with twin proprotors, the drones offer vertical lift, hovering capability, and efficient long-range flight. The platform integrates Lockheed Martin’s MATRIX autonomy technology, an open system co-developed with DARPA for use across both rotary and fixed-wing platforms. The Nomad is designed for extended missions, enabling surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational flexibility in diverse environments. Its hybrid configuration allows for rapid deployment, hovering over targets, and transition to forward flight to cover large areas quickly. The drones aim to support military operations requiring long endurance, low observability, and multi-domain maneuverability.
