Japan has proposed an upgraded Mogami-class frigate equipped with US-compatible systems for Australia’s general-purpose frigate program. Developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the vessel aims to strengthen interoperability between Australia, Japan, and the US. It’s one of two finalists—competing with Germany’s MEKO A-200 by Thyssenkrupp—for a contract worth AU$10 billion ($6.62 billion). Eleven ships are planned, with three to be built overseas and the remainder in Australia. A decision is expected by late 2025.
