Canberra has committed AUD 3.9 billion as an initial allocation toward a new shipyard complex that will support nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS agreement. The facility, located in Osborne, South Australia, will anchor a long-term undersea capability strategy aimed at strengthening Australia’s deterrence posture in the Indo-Pacific. The full submarine program is estimated to cost up to AUD 235 billion over 30 years, incorporating the acquisition of US-built submarines from 2032 and eventual domestic construction. Complementary investments include an AUD 8 billion upgrade of naval infrastructure in Perth to maintain and support the future fleet.
