In a significant expansion of its naval fleet, Romania has reached an agreement to purchase the Hisar-class TCG Akhisar patrol vessel from Turkey to provide strategic protection for the Neptune Deep offshore gas project. The government-authorized purchase is valued at roughly €223 million, with another €42 million ear-marked for system installations that will ensure operational capability. This planned procurement still awaits parliamentary approval before it can be finalized.

The TCG Akhisar—measuring nearly 100 meters in length and supporting a crew of over 100—will serve as a cornerstone for protecting vital energy infrastructure. The ship will be delivered within six months of contract signing and subsequently be fitted in Romania with sophisticated combat and navigation systems, including Western missile and torpedo packages. The acquisition is part of a broader push to secure Romania’s future as a leading EU gas supplier with Neptune Deep poised to commence drilling operations. The Ministry of Defence has also signaled plans to build additional patrol vessels locally, reinforcing Romania’s commitment to both domestic shipbuilding and maritime security.
