Naval Group has initiated sea trials for De Grasse (S638), the fourth Barracuda-class nuclear-powered attack submarine built for the French Navy. The trials follow dockside evaluations and reactor activation completed after the vessel’s launch in 2025. De Grasse is part of the broader Suffren-class program designed to replace France’s aging Rubis submarines. The fleet will ultimately include six submarines, all expected to enter service by 2030. The Barracuda-class features advanced sensors, land-attack missiles, torpedoes, and a K15 nuclear reactor, enabling extended underwater endurance and deep-sea operations.
