A $1.85 billion contract to acquire essential parts and start preliminary construction for future US Navy Virginia-class submarines has been awarded to General Dynamics Electric Boat.
The initiative’s goals are to maintain the submarine program’s timetable and to guarantee that suppliers are prepared for future production requirements. The Virginia-class submarine program has acquired 40 submarines since its inception in 1998, with 24 now in active service and 16 either under construction or waiting for delivery.
The Virginia-class submarines are supplanting the older Los Angeles-class boats as they retire. They are made for missions in both coastal and open-ocean environments. General Dynamics Electric Boat has recently achieved important milestones in its support of the Virginia-class submarine program.
The firm won a $12.4 billion deal in May to construct two more Block V Virginia-class attack submarines, the SSN-812 (USS Baltimore) and the SSN-813 (USS Atlanta).
The sixth Block IV Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, which has more torpedo tubes and bigger missile launch systems, was commissioned by the US Navy in April. This marked the 24th of its kind.
In March, General Dynamics obtained a $1.06 billion contract to start acquiring long-lead parts for Block VI submarines.
