“Germany has disclosed its intention to purchase Boxer armored combat vehicles in order to integrate key capabilities into the military’s newly formed Medium Forces.”
German defense companies Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland debuted the 30-millimeter Remote Control turret (RCT30) version of the vehicle in 2016 as part of the package.
The local news organization Hartpunkt reports that Berlin’s proposed budget for this future acquisition is 3.9 billion euros ($4.5 billion), with 1.1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) set aside for the program’s early phases.
The number of Boxers that the NATO member intends to acquire under this plan was not made public, but sources predict that it will include around 148 vehicles.
The RCT30 will supplement 123 Boxers, which are being acquired under a distinct contract for the military’s Heavy Weapon Carrier Infantry and are based on Australia’s Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) configuration.
