Copenhagen has authorized the construction of five Arctic patrol ships as part of a broader effort to modernize its presence around Greenland. The vessels will be assembled in Frederikshavn under a state-owned industrial setup following a Deloitte review that identified distributed manufacturing as the most cost-effective approach. Scheduled for service entry by 2030, the ships will replace older classes that have struggled with reliability issues. Although the manufacturer has yet to be finalized, a consortium involving Terma and other Danish firms is seen as a likely candidate. The decision comes amid increased scrutiny of Denmark’s Arctic defense posture.
