Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena has achieved a significant milestone by completing the installation of the Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into an S80 class submarine. This marks the first time a third-generation AIP has been fitted into a submarine, a feat unprecedented in Spanish shipbuilding history. The event was attended by Spanish National Armament Director, Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto. This new technology will dramatically enhance the Spanish Navy’s submarine capabilities, allowing them to remain submerged for extended periods, a considerable improvement over the few days typical for conventional diesel-electric submarines.
