To aid with the modernization of the US Coast Guard’s polar cutter fleet, a stand-in icebreaker vessel has been acquired. Handed over by Offshore Service Vessels, the primary function of the MV Aiviq is to maintain the force’s presence in the Arctic until the arrival of the service’s new Polar Security Cutters by the 2030s. In November, the Louisiana-based maritime business was given the $125 million deal to purchase the commercially available system.
