Japan’s seventh Mogami-class stealth frigate, the JS Niyodo, was officially commissioned and handed over by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki. Assigned to the Escort Division 12 at Kure Naval Base, the ship joins Japan’s growing fleet of modern surface combatants. The frigate is the first in its class to incorporate the Mk 41 VLS, enabling fast-response missile launches against evolving threats. Named after a river in the Shikoku region, the Niyodo is built for flexible deployment, capable of operating as a standalone asset or in coordination with carrier-led operations.
