The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has received its fifth Taigei-class submarine, JS Chōgei (SS-517), built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The submarine represents a new generation of underwater warfare platforms designed to replace the older Sōryū-class fleet. Measuring 84 meters in length and displacing around 3,000 tonnes, the vessel incorporates advanced detection systems, improved stealth features, and lithium-ion battery technology for extended endurance. Equipped with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, the submarine is capable of conducting a wide range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and patrol operations. It will be stationed at Yokosuka Naval Base, where it will operate in strategically important areas such as the Miyako Strait. The Taigei-class program reflects Japan’s commitment to enhancing maritime security amid rising regional tensions. With plans to build up to 10 submarines by 2031, the initiative aims to strengthen Japan’s undersea capabilities and ensure operational readiness in contested waters.
