The Nordic and Baltic countries have unveiled a coordinated $500-million commitment to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), reinforcing their long-standing support for Kyiv’s defense against Russia. The funding will help purchase a range of US-made military equipment that Ukraine urgently needs as its armed forces continue to confront heavy battlefield pressure. The announcement was made during a gathering in Helsinki attended by defense ministers from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden, along with Iceland’s foreign minister. The meeting focused on regional defense priorities and reaffirmed the group’s unified backing for Ukraine. Officials stressed afterward that Ukraine’s strength is essential to ensuring stability across Europe. PURL was established in July through discussions between NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and US President Donald Trump. The platform compiles Ukraine’s defense requirements and has them validated by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, ensuring that the most urgent needs are addressed quickly. NATO then oversees the delivery of equipment under programs such as Security Assistance and Training to Ukraine. A number of countries have already made significant contributions. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden pledged a combined $585 million to acquire air defense and artillery systems from the US. The Netherlands financed the first PURL delivery package, valued at $577 million, which included Patriot air defense components. Despite the establishment of PURL, Ukraine experienced a 43 percent decline in military aid during July and August compared to the first six months of the year. The newly announced $500-million contribution aims to stabilize support levels and ensure Ukraine continues to receive the tools and systems it needs to sustain its defense operations.
