Under Seoul’s $3 billion naval expansion, Rolls-Royce has been selected to provide the propulsion systems for the upcoming fleet of Ulsan-class frigates, which will total six vessels.

The MT30 gas turbine will serve as the primary engine for high-speed navigation, while four diesel generators will power electric motors for standard cruising, ensuring a flexible and efficient propulsion system. These motors are being developed in collaboration with STX-Engines.

The initial shipbuilding work is being undertaken by Hanwha Ocean, starting with two ships. Rolls-Royce’s equipment, including propeller systems, will be central to the new class’s hybrid propulsion setup.
