Spain has greenlit a €3.2-billion, decade-long upgrade of its five F100 frigates, intended to extend their operational relevance through 2045. Navantia will lead the overhaul, which targets obsolescence removal, enhanced system commonality, improved operability, and compliance with updated environmental rules. The effort will boost national industry by supporting 3,500 jobs and adding €215 million to GDP annually. The Aegis-based frigates, delivered from 2002–2012, will replace Harpoon missiles with Naval Strike Missiles while retaining advanced sensors, SPY-1D radar, and MK 41 VLS.
