Sweden has contracted Spain’s Freire Shipyard to build four naval support vessels designed for icy and harsh-weather operations. The 47-meter ships will carry 16 crew, operate for up to 10 days at sea, and feature diesel-electric propulsion for improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Equipped with multiple cranes and a stern ramp, the vessels can independently load cargo and vehicles, strengthening logistics flexibility. The acquisition forms part of Sweden’s broader naval expansion, which includes new frigate support partnerships and autonomous underwater systems.
