The Polish Navy has commissioned the first of two signal intelligence (SIGINT) ships that Swedish defense company Saab is constructing.
The ORP Jerzy Różyck, named after the Polish mathematician who cracked the code of the German Enigma encryption device during World War II, will collect intelligence data from throughout the range of maritime electronic intelligence, including naval bases and other ships.
In addition, the ships will be expected to carry out hydroacoustic reconnaissance to identify potential underwater threats from both crewed and crewless ships. The ships are a component of the Delfin program, which aims to take the place of two older Project 863 Moma-class radio reconnaissance ships that were ordered in 1975 and 1976.
The project was given to Saab in November 2022 with an estimated value of 620 million euros ($730 million), and delivery is anticipated by 2027.
The first ship started construction in April 2023, and the second one followed in November 2023.
Remontowa Shipbuilding, a Polish shipbuilder, is constructing the ships at its shipyard in Gdansk.
