The initial group of Italian Navy U212A Todaro-class submarines will be upgraded under the Near Future Submarine (NFS) program, according to a contract modification signed by the European intergovernmental organization Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). Based on advancements incorporated into the newer NFS ships, the upgrade is based on a mid-life update analysis that pinpointed the systems and equipment that need to be modernized. Through shared logistical support, the initiative will bridge the technological gap between the two generations of submarines, assuring cost efficiency.
