By incorporating haptics technology into its Synthetic Training Environment Live Training Systems (STE LTS), the US Army is attempting to close the divide between virtual training and real-world combat.
The “wearable” devices used in haptics technology can send vibrations and forces to simulate the sense of touch, adding a degree of realism to training simulations while avoiding the dangers and risks of actual combat training.
By introducing physical feedback like simulated bullet impacts, gun recoil, and resistance, the integration of haptics into STE LTS will make virtual training more immersive. In the future, the army is also looking at methods to integrate explosion effects.
