Indonesia has finalized a nearly $1 billion agreement to procure two Istif-class frigates from Turkey, announced during a defense convention in Istanbul. The acquisition supports Jakarta’s drive to boost its naval strength amid growing regional tensions, especially in the South China Sea. It also aligns with Turkey’s aim to expand its shipbuilding industry through global partnerships. Indonesian state-owned PT PAL and Turkish shipbuilder TAIS will jointly manage the project. Though collaboration is underway, reports suggest the ships may already be under construction in Turkey and will be redirected from the Turkish Navy for faster delivery, potentially delaying Ankara’s own fleet expansion plans.
