The U.S. State Department has approved a $1.7-billion foreign military sale to Spain to support the mid-life upgrade of its F100 (Álvaro de Bazán-class) frigates. The modernization package includes upgraded Aegis weapon systems, vertical launch systems, next-generation radars, and digital processors, along with munitions, software, training, and logistics support. The overhaul is expected to extend the operational life of the five-ship fleet until 2045. American firms including Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics will support delivery, with U.S. personnel providing technical oversight during the upgrade process.
