The US Navy has awarded preliminary design contracts to General Dynamics NASSCO and Vard Marine as part of its Next Generation Logistics Ship (NGLS) initiative. The program focuses on creating a fleet of versatile, mid-sized vessels capable of operating in challenging environments while supporting logistics and humanitarian missions. NASSCO and Vard Marine will contribute concept development work, receiving $3.9 million and $4.5 million respectively. Vard will execute its portion in Houston alongside Hanwha Defense USA. Initially launched in 2020, the NGLS program aims to produce 13 ships that will enhance the Navy’s ability to sustain operations across dispersed theaters. A larger contract covering full design and construction is anticipated by 2028. The initiative reflects a shift toward more agile and adaptable logistics platforms to meet evolving operational demands.
