The US Air Force has contracted Red 6, a Florida-based AR innovator, to integrate its Airborne Tactical Augmented Reality System (ATARS) into F-16 fighter jets. ATARS enables pilots to train in live flight against AI-driven virtual enemies, providing immersive and scalable alternatives to costly red-team exercises. Initial integration will involve two F-16s within 12–18 months. The system combines a helmet-mounted optical suite, onboard computing, and low-latency synthetic environments, producing realistic, full-color adversaries and threat objects. Already tested on the MC-130, Hawk T-2, and T-38 trainer, ATARS is aligned with USAF’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft initiative, potentially shaping how manned fighters train alongside loyal wingman drones.
