Italian firm Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS) has secured a contract to supply 48 Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes to the Indian Navy, intended for all six Kalvari-class submarines under Project 75. Valued at ₹1,896 crore and finalized in December 2025, deliveries are expected from April 2028 to early 2030. The BSA torpedo incorporates advanced propulsion, guidance, and countermeasure resistance technologies, enhancing India’s underwater strike capability against surface and subsurface threats. WASS emphasized interoperability with existing platforms and proposed technology transfer and co-production under the Make in India initiative, enabling domestic firms to gain expertise in torpedo electronics, propulsion, and warheads. The system’s modularity allows future integration with platforms like Project 75I conventional subs or potential SSNs, strengthening India’s second-strike deterrence and maritime security posture in the Indo-Pacific amid regional submarine competition.
