Bulgaria is reportedly considering the purchase of more than 100 Centauros counter-drone systems from Greece under the European Union’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) funding mechanism. The Centauros system, developed by Hellenic Aerospace Industry, was initially designed as a ground-based anti-drone platform before being adapted for naval use aboard Greek frigates operating in the Red Sea. SAFE, launched in May 2025, supports urgent defense investments to close capability gaps across EU member states. Cyprus is also assessing the Centauros system, including potential integration with its Barak MX air defense network. The system focuses primarily on soft-kill electronic countermeasures, though an upgraded variant with a 40-kilometer radar and kinetic interception option is under development.
