General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has announced a collaboration with Saab to develop an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capability for its MQ-9B series of Remotely Piloted Aircraft. This includes the SkyGuardian®, SeaGuardian®, the UK’s Protector, and the upcoming MQ-9B STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) variant currently in development. The first AEW-equipped MQ-9B flight is scheduled for 2026.

The partnership will integrate Saab’s advanced AEW sensors with the MQ-9B, the world’s leading unmanned aircraft system in terms of range and endurance. Whether operating over land or at sea, the MQ-9B equipped with AEW capabilities will deliver cost-effective airspace surveillance and control, offering a more affordable alternative to traditional platforms.
