Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division has unveiled the Nomad, a new family of next-generation VTOL drones that blend the attributes of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. The Nomad drones feature a twin-proprotor design and integrate MATRIX autonomy technology, co-developed with DARPA to enable versatile operation across rotary and fixed-wing platforms. Capable of vertical takeoff, hovering, and efficient forward flight, these drones combine helicopter maneuverability with airplane-like speed and range, offering long-endurance mission capability. The open architecture of the Nomad allows integration of diverse payloads and sensors, supporting modular mission configurations for reconnaissance, surveillance, and other operational roles. The platform’s hybrid design provides armed forces with a highly adaptable UAV solution, suitable for deployment in complex or contested environments requiring both agility and extended operational reach.
