A new tripartite memorandum of understanding has been signed between a US unmanned surface vessel company, its sales and marketing partner in Taiwan, and the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in research, development, and co-manufacturing of advanced unmanned surface craft in Taiwan. Under this deal, the parties will focus on technology sharing, workforce development, supply chain integration, and mutual knowledge exchange. The initiative is designed to enhance Taiwan’s defense readiness by building local industrial capacity, supporting long-term technological self-reliance, and reducing dependency on foreign imports. The timing of this agreement is significant, given Taiwan’s increasing emphasis on drone and unmanned defense systems to counter potential threats. NCSIST has already been proactive in forging new alliances. Recently, it partnered with AV to strengthen unmanned and precision strike capabilities, while also teaming with Kratos to convert a target platform into the Mighty Hornet IV high-speed attack drone. In addition, Shield AI and Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation joined forces to advance drone development and bolster Taiwan’s aerospace industry. The combined effect of these collaborations represents a comprehensive approach by Taiwan to expand its unmanned systems ecosystem. The MARTAC deal not only represents industrial cooperation but also signals deeper international support for Taiwan’s defense preparedness. Collectively, these projects reinforce Taiwan’s technological base and position it as a growing hub for unmanned defense technologies in the Asia-Pacific region.
