The US Department of Defense has tasked Raytheon with a $258.7 million contract to develop and build the SM-2 Block IIICU surface-to-air missile. This effort, scheduled for completion in September 2031, includes $18.4 million in Canadian foreign military sales funding. The Block IIICU marks a major leap over earlier versions (III/IIIA/IIIB), adding a dual-mode seeker (active + semi-active) for improved performance against anti-ship cruise missiles and aircraft. It also borrows advanced systems from the SM-6 Block IAU and incorporates a new fin structure plus jet-tab thrust vectoring for agility. With a range of 90 miles (145 km), it will be deployed on Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Zumwalt-class destroyers, Ticonderoga cruisers, and Constellation-class frigates. The missile also supports Naval Integrated Fire Control – Counter Air, linking ships, sensors, and aircraft for long-range engagement. Production ceased in 2017 but resumed in 2021; initial testing is planned for 2027, after which full-rate production will follow. Besides the US Navy, early buyers include Australia, Canada, Japan, and South Korea.
