Saab has announced a contract worth 550 million Swedish kronor ($58.5 million) to deliver the Giraffe 4A radar system and associated services to a Latin American defense customer. This is the Stockholm-based company’s first sale of the land-based version of Giraffe 4A to the region, reflecting increased interest in cutting-edge radar capabilities.
The Giraffe 4A system, operational since 2014, combines air defense surveillance, threat detection, and military air traffic control functions in a single platform. It can track multiple targets simultaneously at distances of up to 400 kilometers, covering threats ranging from manned aircraft to unmanned aerial systems, missiles, and artillery fire.
With 360-degree surveillance capability, the radar refreshes data every second. If operators direct it toward a specific threat sector, it can provide up to eight updates per second, ensuring constant situational awareness in contested environments.
The platform is designed for rapid mobility and deployment. It can be transported via major military airlifters—including the C-130 Hercules, A400M Atlas, and C-17 Globemaster III—and set up in under 10 minutes by just two personnel, making it ideal for fast-paced operations.
