Spain has finalized a $1.7-billion agreement with Raytheon for four Patriot air and missile defense systems, significantly strengthening its national and NATO-aligned air defense posture. The package includes launchers, radars, engagement control stations, coordination centers, and power units, with US approval granted in late 2023. While PAC-3 MSE interceptors are being acquired under separate contracts, the deal reflects Madrid’s broader commitment to layered air defense. Spain already operates three Patriot batteries, one of which has been deployed to Turkey under NATO’s Active Fence mission. The acquisition enhances Spain’s ability to counter ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and advanced aerial threats amid growing regional security challenges.
