Spain’s military is set to acquire over 200 new self-propelled howitzers as part of a major modernization effort to replace its outdated M109 artillery systems. The €3 billion ($3.51 billion) investment will be split between two subprograms covering both tracked and wheeled variants along with supporting vehicles.

The first subprogram, valued at €1.82 billion ($2.12 billion), involves the purchase of 128 tracked howitzers for the Spanish Army and Marine Infantry. These systems are expected to be highly mobile and automated, requiring minimal crew and offering rapid deployment. Specifications include a 47-52 caliber barrel and a firing range exceeding 40 km with base-bleed munitions. The deal also includes ammunition, recovery, command, and optional maintenance vehicles.

The second subprogram covers 86 wheeled howitzers for the army, with a total cost of €1.18 billion ($1.38 billion). These may feature 8×8 or 10×10 configurations and will be accompanied by similar support vehicles, including recovery and maintenance units.
