The Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan has formally approved a large expansion of its artillery modernization program by authorizing the purchase of 168 M109A7 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers from the United States. This new procurement aims to gradually replace Taiwan’s old fleet of legacy artillery platforms, replacing the original plan for 40 units. The purchase comprises an unknown quantity of M992A3 field artillery ammunition supply vehicles, which utilize the same improved chassis as the M109A7, increasing logistical integration and battlefield effectiveness. One of the largest investments in Taiwan’s ground combat capabilities is this purchase, which is worth an estimated NT$90 billion, or around $2.75 billion USD. The Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) program of the U.S. Army produced the M109A7, which has a modern chassis, an updated powerpack, better digital fire control systems, and increased crew safety. These enhancements will greatly increase the Republic of China Army’s mobility, firepower, and survivability in dangerous situations. Additionally, Taiwan will be better able to maintain sustained fire support during extended operations because of the M109A7’s compatibility with modern artillery networks and automated logistics systems.
