The UK Ministry of Defence has advanced Project NYX into a new development phase, commissioning seven UK-based companies to design loyal wingman drones for Apache AH-64E helicopters. The initiative aims to enhance combat mass, survivability, and mission flexibility through manned-unmanned teaming. The drones are expected to perform reconnaissance, strike support, and electronic warfare missions under a “command-not-control” concept that reduces pilot workload. The rotary-wing focus presents unique challenges, including low-altitude operations, degraded communications, and contested electromagnetic environments. By allowing drones to “take the look” ahead of Apaches, Project NYX seeks to rebalance risk and extend battlefield awareness while keeping crewed platforms protected.
