The US State Department has authorized a $3.5-billion missile sale to Germany, covering SM-6 Block I and SM-2 Block IIIC interceptors for the upcoming F127 air-defense frigates. Germany seeks 173 SM-6 and 577 SM-2 IIIC missiles, plus launch canisters, testing gear, spares, engineering support, and long-term sustainment. The SM-6 offers long-range anti-air, anti-surface, and ballistic-missile defense with speeds up to Mach 3.5. The SM-2 IIIC, now completing development toward 2031, adds a dual-mode seeker and advanced control surfaces for improved engagements. The F127 fleet—five ships planned with options for more—will integrate Aegis CMS, AN/SPY-6(V)1 radar, Naval Strike Missiles, 3SM Tyrfing, and potentially Tomahawk Block V.
