Russian media reports that development is underway on a next-generation multirole helicopter intended to replace the aging Mi-8/17 fleet. Named the Mi-80, the new aircraft draws inspiration from the Mi-171A3 and features a modernized design suited to current aviation demands, including upgraded blades and more powerful engines.

Manufacturing is expected to be cost-efficient, with primary assembly handled by Kazan Helicopter Plant and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant—the same facilities behind its predecessor. The Mi-80 is reported to have a 14-ton maximum takeoff weight, a reinforced fuselage with polymer composite components, impact-resistant fuel tanks, and optimized rotor placement to enhance safety and maneuverability.

Currently in the technical specification stage, the program faces financial hurdles but is projected to take five years to complete once fully funded. The Mi-8/17 remains widely used, with over 700 units in service with Russia’s air force and more than 800 employed by other national agencies. Worldwide, around 3,000 units are believed to be in operation.
