The US Navy has awarded Kratos Defense & Security Solutions a Phase 1 contract to develop an in-house sustainment program for its AN/SPY-1 radar systems, key components of Aegis-equipped cruisers and destroyers. This initiative, known as Project Anaconda, is intended to transition radar maintenance and modernization from external vendors to Navy-managed facilities. Under the initial phase, Kratos will establish capabilities to repair, overhaul, and test subsystems including transmitters, signal processors, and antenna arrays. Subsequent phases could see the program reach a total value of $175 million. Kratos will also create the Indiana Radar Integration Complex near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane to centralize integration, sustainment, and prototyping efforts, with operations expected by 2027. The program aims to extend the service life of AN/SPY-1 radars, maintain operational readiness, and retain technical expertise in Navy depots. Although newer vessels are equipped with SPY-6 radars, hundreds of SPY-1 systems remain operational. This project complements broader Navy modernization efforts, including the Integrated Combat System initiative, which seeks software standardization across radar generations for improved interoperability and efficiency.
