China has imposed new sanctions on 20 US defense companies in response to Washington’s latest arms sales to Taiwan, escalating tensions over the island Beijing claims as its territory. The measures target firms including a Boeing defense unit and Northrop Grumman, banning Chinese entities from conducting business with them and freezing any assets held within China. The move follows US approval of defense sales to Taiwan valued at roughly $11 billion, among the largest packages authorized for Taipei. Beijing criticized the sales as interference in its internal affairs and a threat to regional stability. While many of the sanctioned companies have limited exposure to the Chinese market, the action reinforces China’s political messaging and adds pressure to the broader US-China defense relationship, even as similar sanctions in the past have had minimal direct commercial impact.
