FN America has secured a $2 million US Army contract to advance development of its Precision Grenadier System (PGS) prototype, part of a broader initiative to enhance infantry firepower and accuracy at the squad level. The funding supports further refinement of the company’s MTL-30, a semi-automatic 30mm grenade launcher optimized for modularity and precision. The system is designed to engage defilade positions, counter small drones, and provide extended-range lethality beyond standard 40mm launchers. Its design features include ambidextrous controls, a detachable 3- or 5-round magazine, and an adjustable M4-style stock. A modular rail system supports optical sights and sensors, allowing integration with existing soldier systems. FN stated that the prototype already meets several performance benchmarks but will undergo reliability and manufacturability improvements before field trials. The PGS program follows earlier attempts to field an airburst grenade launcher, notably the XM25, which was canceled in 2018 after persistent technical and cost issues. Learning from those challenges, the Army is now emphasizing practical, soldier-centric solutions. Through initiatives like the xTechSoldier Lethality competition, the Army has encouraged private firms to innovate in weapon ergonomics, integration, and sustainment. The MTL-30 exemplifies this new approach, aiming to deliver precision effects in lightweight, adaptable formats. The contract reinforces FN America’s role as a key partner in modernizing US infantry capabilities, blending technological sophistication with combat practicality to provide soldiers with reliable, high-impact fire support.
