Ireland is on track to have its first main military radar system, which can identify planes designed to avoid conventional detection, such as those with sophisticated stealth technology.” The Irish military will be able to identify hijacked aircraft and aircraft operating with their transponders intentionally turned off, a technique frequently used by drug traffickers and other criminal operators, as well as stealth planes thanks to the new radar.
At the moment, Ireland is unable to independently monitor such threats in its airspace.
Once installed, the radar is anticipated to be a critical component of Ireland’s national security plan, offering real-time tracking and early warning in and around Irish-controlled airspace.
