Romania is preparing to field the Merops anti-drone system after successful testing against Shahed-type unmanned aerial threats. Operators are currently undergoing training, and the system has already demonstrated effectiveness in Ukraine, where it has reportedly intercepted more than 1,000 drones. Developed by US startup Project Eagle, Merops combines a truck-mounted launch platform, ground control station, and high-speed Surveyor interceptor drone. The interceptor uses AI-enabled sensors, can reach speeds of 282 km/h, and carries an explosive warhead for direct or proximity kills. Costing roughly $15,000 per interceptor, Merops offers a highly cost-effective counter to mass drone attacks. NATO allies, including Poland, are also evaluating the system as part of broader eastern-flank air defense efforts.
