Saab has secured a contract valued at approximately 540 million Swedish kronor ($57 million) from NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency to extend the operational life of theArthurartillery locating radar systems used by the Spanish Army. This modernization effort seeks to preserve Spain’s artillery-locating capabilities while enhancing operational efficiency through technology upgrades. The improvements will focus on increasing mobility, expanding detection ranges, and boosting accuracy, allowing the radars to detect more targets at greater distances while reducing their electronic signature to improve survivability. The highly mobileArthurradar can be deployed or packed up in under two minutes and requires minimal personnel for operation due to its high automation. It is also compatible with a wide range of vehicles and designed to function reliably in demanding battlefield environments. The radar system tracks incoming artillery fire, calculates enemy battery positions, provides precise impact information, and supports quick counter-battery responses. Currently, theArthurradar is in service with 12 countries, including Norway, Sweden, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, and the UK. Sweden recently announced plans to donate five units to Ukraine as part of its military aid package.
