South Korea has launched a major modernization effort to rebuild the core command-and-control system it operates jointly with the United States, introducing artificial intelligence to enhance allied planning, coordination, and battlefield decision-making on the Korean Peninsula. The upgrade of the Allied Korea Joint Command and Control System (AKJCCS) is being led by Hanwha Systems, selected as prime contractor in December 2025, in cooperation with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Scheduled for deployment in 2029, the revamped system will incorporate AI-based situational analysis, automated decision-support tools, cloud computing infrastructure, and virtual desktop environments to accelerate information sharing across commands. Additional enhancements include real-time translation, secure teleconferencing, and reinforced cybersecurity to improve interoperability between US and South Korean forces in rapidly evolving operational environments. The program supports Seoul’s long-term objective of regaining wartime operational control, addressing a key US requirement by strengthening indigenous command-and-control capabilities while maintaining seamless integration with the CENTRIXS-K network.
