Sweden has received the final batch of upgraded Archer 6×6 artillery systems from BAE Systems Bofors, concluding a nationwide modernization effort aimed at enhancing long-range firepower and interoperability within NATO. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) confirmed that all 24 systems have been upgraded to the “Version C” standard, incorporating advanced command-and-control modules, digital fire-support interfaces, and improved mobility. The handover restores full operational readiness for two artillery battalions, marking what FMV officials hailed as a “key milestone” in the country’s transformation into a fully NATO-integrated force. The Archer upgrade program is part of Sweden’s broader modernization strategy encompassing the air, land, and naval domains. This includes recent delivery of JAS 39 Gripen fighters with AESA radars, ongoing trials of A26 Blekinge-class submarines, and expanded production of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles for both domestic use and export to allies such as Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Defense analysts say the Archer’s digital enhancements will enable faster targeting cycles and seamless data exchange with allied artillery networks. Equipped with a 155 mm/L52 gun, the system can deliver precision strikes at ranges exceeding 40 km. The completion of the program signals Sweden’s commitment to NATO readiness, deterrence, and rapid-response capability across Northern Europe’s evolving security landscape.
