The goal of the initiative, called SONGBOW, is to eliminate sophisticated threats like cruise missiles, hypersonic glide vehicles, and drone swarms at the speed of light.
At its center is a 400-kilowatt laser created by fusing many 50-kilowatt emitters into a single, precisely guided beam that represents a considerable improvement over current shipboard systems.
