The UK has announced a significant modernization step for its L111A1 heavy machine gun, with a £20 million ($27.3 million) contract awarded to FN Herstal, reinforcing the British armed forces’ focus on sustaining firepower dominance. The Ministry of Defense detailed that the initiative combines a two-year mid-life upgrade with an eight-year in-service support program. This structure ensures the weapon continues to serve effectively across British Army and Royal Navy operations throughout the next decade. The L111A1, a modernized version of the historic Browning M2, is a cornerstone of the UK’s heavy fire support. FN Herstal, the UK’s long-standing defense partner and its sole manufacturer of assault rifles and machine guns, will implement the improvements at its Kent facility. Deliveries will roll out in phases: 18 percent by March 2026, 50 percent by 2027, and full completion by 2028. The modernization introduces features like a soft mount system to reduce recoil and a quick-change barrel mechanism, enhancing both accuracy and reliability in combat scenarios. Capable of firing .50-caliber rounds at rates between 485 and 635 rounds per minute, the system gives commanders adaptable firepower, whether mounted on vehicles or deployed on tripods for defensive setups. Effective ranges extend up to 2,000 meters, making the weapon crucial for both offensive maneuvers and sustained suppression fire. This program represents not only a tactical boost but also industrial continuity. FN Herstal emphasized that the contract coincides with its 50th year of UK manufacturing, underscoring decades of partnership with the MoD.
