The United States has authorized a $162 million arms package to Norway for the MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedo, reaffirming close defense ties and NATO security commitments. The proposed Foreign Military Sale covers up to 50 torpedo systems, along with containers, software, training, support equipment, spare parts, and repair services. RTX Corporation will lead the contract as the main supplier. The MK 54 is the US Navy’s standard lightweight torpedo, designed for anti-submarine warfare across a wide range of operational environments. Featuring a guidance and control system powered by advanced processors and tactical software, it is optimized for shallow-water use where traditional torpedoes face difficulties. At nearly 9 feet long and weighing 607 pounds, the weapon delivers a 100-pound high-explosive warhead with the precision needed to neutralize modern submarines. The transaction is framed as part of US policy to support NATO allies and ensure readiness against current and emerging threats. For Norway, the torpedoes enhance its naval deterrence posture, particularly in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, where Russia has expanded undersea activities. Implementation will include US personnel temporarily stationed in Norway to provide technical assistance and ensure proper system integration. Defense observers note that this agreement comes amid a series of global MK 54 sales, including recent approvals for Saudi Arabia, India, and Germany, reflecting growing international demand for advanced undersea warfare capabilities. By acquiring the MK 54, Norway not only strengthens its own maritime security but also boosts NATO’s collective ability to monitor and counter submarine threats in strategically vital waters.
