Northrop Grumman has been awarded a $233-million contract to manufacture and deliver the MK54 MOD 2 lightweight torpedo for the US Navy, addressing an urgent operational requirement in anti-submarine warfare. The contract covers development of a new, more lethal warhead, manufacturing qualification, and delivery of torpedoes for testing. Work will be conducted at facilities in Minnesota and West Virginia, with initial operational testing targeted for 2027. The MOD 2 builds on earlier variants developed by Raytheon and is the result of a collaborative effort involving the US Navy, Australian Defence Force, and industry partners. L3Harris is contributing propulsion system advancements critical to the torpedo’s performance.
